  • Evaluation process may include 60-90+ minutes of telehealth evaluation to be followed by 60-90+ minute of in-person evaluation.

  • Families will receive a report including management recommendations

About Dr. Susan

Pediatric Complex Care Consultation

Dr. Susan Hetzel Frangiskakis, MD, FAAP, brings more than two decades of pediatric expertise shaped by deep clinical experience, academic leadership, and a rare specialization in evaluating complex, diagnostically challenging cases. Her background includes seven years as a member of the renowned Diagnostic Referral Group at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, a role that placed her at the center of some of the region’s most intricate pediatric diagnostic dilemmas.

Her expertise as a second‑opinion specialist

Families facing uncertainty often seek Dr. Susan for her ability to synthesize complex histories, identify overlooked patterns, and guide next steps with clarity and compassion. Her second‑opinion work is grounded in:

  • Extensive experience with medically complex children — including rare conditions, multisystem disease, and atypical presentations.

  • A strong foundation in academic pediatrics, where she taught medical students and residents while practicing as a pediatric hospitalist.

  • A diagnostic style shaped by high-volume referral work, requiring meticulous evaluation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clear communication with families navigating uncertainty.

This experience continues to shape her practice today, where she offers thoughtful, thorough second opinions grounded in both clinical rigor and deep empathy.

A modern practice built around complex care

Now practicing in Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Susan applies this background to a direct primary care model that allows for:

  • Extended visits that support deep diagnostic exploration

  • Rapid access for families seeking timely second opinions

  • Continuity with a single physician, eliminating the fragmentation common in large systems

  • Holistic evaluation that integrates medical, developmental, and behavioral insights

Her approach is especially valuable for families who have felt unheard, rushed, or lost in the traditional healthcare system.

Dr. Susan Hetzel Frangiskakis, MD, FAAP, DABOM, CLC
Pediatrician and Obesity Medicine Specialist in Madison, WI

Dr. Susan has over twenty years of experience in caring for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents including those with complex medical conditions.  She is also experienced with managing mental health issues, as well as behavioral and developmental challenges. She is board certified in both pediatrics and obesity medicine.  Lastly, she has obtained special training in autism evaluation.

Dr. Susan strives to see patients within 1 week of a new appointment being made, often closer to 1-2 days after enrollment.  Telehealth visits and secure messaging are available, including after-hours messaging.

Dr. Susan is a mother and pediatrician, so she very well understands the many frustrations of traditional pediatric care in large medical systems in terms of difficulty getting your child in to see their own pediatrician, often necessitating going to an unfamiliar provider and/or utilizing urgent care at an additional cost.  Furthermore, you may have limited access to your pediatrician after-hours, often with questions addressed by a covering provider who is unfamiliar with your child, contributing to the impersonal nature of traditional pediatric practices.  Dr. Susan has addressed these difficulties by maintaining a smaller patient panel, thereby allowing her to provide a more personalized care model where you can get ready access, particularly when your child is sick and without incurring additional sick visit costs.  Dr. Susan values developing close, personal relationships with both the children and their families, thereby allowing her to provide the high-quality care the patient and their parents deserve.

My family had Dr. Susan for our Pediatrician and the care was unmatched. Not only was she knowledgeable, but she genuinely cared about our children. When our oldest was seriously ill, Dr. Susan made regular visits to the hospital and stepped in to advocate for our child. Without her, our oldest child would have continued to progress badly and suffer needlessly with other treatments. Even after we had to move away, she remained caring and asked about our children. We are eternally grateful for her care and would recommend Dr. Susan for any family seeking a Pediatrician for their family!
